Michael Crichton wrote “Jurassic Park” more than 30 years ago. The book went on to spawn a movie series and media franchise, thanks in large part to its idea of genetic engineering bringing back long extinct species. Now, that premise is becoming less and less fictional.
Scientists at Colossal Laboratories & Biosciences recently said they have aspirations of resurrecting a bear and a beaver that have been extinct for more than 10,000 years. The bear, known as the Arctodus simus, was about the size of a grizzly and is thought to have approached a top speed of 40 mph. The beaver, Castoroides ohioensis, weighed close to 300 pounds and sported front incisors that measured 6 inches. As much as I love animals, those sound like two I would not want to come across in the woods.
The company’s goal is to make “extinction a thing of the past.” And while that sounds great, it’s hard to tell if the animals will be ready for our world … or if our world will be ready for them.
