Yesterday I wrote about scientists aspiring to resurrect extinct animals via genetic engineering. However, thanks to a tiny little wasp, the Wilkins’ bunting will hopefully never find itself on that list.

A little more than a decade ago, scientists discovered an invasive insect on Nightingale Island that drastically endangered both the species of finch as well as the forest itself. To combat it, the scientists decided to introduce a parasitic wasp to target the insect. While only about 10% of the wasps survived the COVID-affected trip from London to South Africa, they were eventually released in 2021. Since then, the forest has recovered and the finch population is expected to stabilize over the coming years.

Usually when humans interact with an isolated ecosystem, we harm it. It’s nice to see us bring one back from the depths of despair.
