And just like that, it’s over.
Just like that, the Philadelphia Phillies, the team that “was on a mission” to get back to the World Series after flaming out in the NLCS a year ago, crashed even harder Wednesday night when they were eliminated from the MLB playoffs by the New York Mets.
I am not going to lie. I kind of saw it coming when Pete Alonso hit the series-winning home run versus the Milwaukee Brewers. They have the “magic” the Phils had in 2022 and the Arizona Diamondbacks had in 2023. But as much as it was about the Mets being hot, it was just as much about the Phillies being “not.” An offense that was in the top five of most league stats, as well as a pitching staff that boasted five all-stars, collapsed in tandem (save Zack Wheeler), as the team was outscored 23-12 (and seven of those 12 came in one game) in its four games. You aren’t beating many teams with those numbers.
The MLB playoffs are a fickle beast that usually rewards the hottest team more than it does the best team. And no matter which way you slice it, the Phillies were neither the past month-plus. Perhaps I will try and go into next season with zero expectations again.
