This week’s report has a forward-looking theme, as the NetZero Insider team examines reports, proposals, recommendations and predictions about the next steps in the clean energy transition.

On the broadest scale, the International Energy Agency’s flagship annual report on renewables shows the world is on track to add 5,500 GW of new renewable energy capacity by 2030, increasing total capacity by 2.7 times over current levels. John Cropley reports.

On the narrowest scale, Cropley has a story on the New York Power Authority’s draft plan for 3.5 GW of new generation. It is NYPA’s opening move in its new role as a renewable energy developer; many or even most of the 40 projects proposed are not expected to reach construction stages.

James Downing digs into a report by RMI and the Virtual Power Plant Partnership that lays out a growth case for virtual power plants as a clean, affordable means of meeting the growing need for electricity through the rest of this decade.

Advanced nuclear technology is another option to meet this rising demand. Cropley reports on recent guidance NARUC offered to state-level regulators and policymakers who must decide how to deal with this complex resource as it matures.

For other news on net-zero resources, we offer our usual roundup of coverage by other media outlets:

  • The Financial Post looks at Canada’s Bay of Fundy, home to the most powerful tides in the world and a history of failed efforts to generate electricity with them.

  • Inside Climate News reports that five of the 10 largest U.S. coal plants now have retirement dates, and a sixth soon may join the list.

  • Three sources look at the same issue from three angles — POWER reports that experts say gas-fired generation is key to grid reliability, Canary Media covers the Sierra Club analysis showing U.S. utilities’ plans to expand gas generation conflict with climate goals, and the Energy Information Administration reports the U.S. set an all-time one-day record Aug. 2 for gas-fired power generation, 7.1 million MWh.

  • Ohio Capital Journal has a report on a collaborative media investigation that found fossil fuel interests are working to thwart utility-scale solar in one Ohio county, with help from the local newspaper.

  • BNN Bloomberg has a story on a study by Harvard researchers that found green hydrogen is likely to be much more expensive than most projections indicate because most projections do not include the significant costs of storage and distribution.

  • Energywire has a story on the EPA’s conclusion that dozens of carbon sequestration projects contain dangerous design flaws

All this and much more is gathered in this week’s report.
