NetZero Insider’s transportation coverage for this week was led by a story from K Kaufmann on the District of Columbia and Maryland’s efforts to scale up EV charging infrastructure.

D.C. recently passed a new building code requiring new building to be “EV ready” starting in 2027 and established a pilot program focused on installing electric vehicle chargers in low-income neighborhoods.

In Maryland, the Public Service Commission recently approved a new charging rate for multi-unit residences, which is intended to keep charging costs in these locations in line with the costs of charging at a single-family dwelling.

Scaling up EV infrastructure to meet state and federal goals will be a major task — a new report from the Alliance for Automotive Innovation estimates the U.S. will need to install more than 1 million public chargers by the end of 2030 to meet the Biden Administration’s electric vehicle goals.

The November election — now less than a month away — could have major impacts on the federal support for the transition to electric vehicles. Vice President Kamala Harris recently told a Michigan rally crowd that she “will never tell you what kind of car you have to drive,” but emphasized that she will continue to invest in domestic electric vehicle manufacturing.

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain said Donald Trump’s proposal to repeal EV incentives threatens “hundreds of thousands of jobs” across the U.S., and reiterated his support for the Harris campaign.

In industry news, GM told shareholders that it is shifting its battery strategy, with the hope of cutting up to $6,000 off the cost of new vehicles. The company plans to focus more on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, shifting away from nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) cells in its lower-end vehicles.

LFP batteries typically offer a shorter range than NCM batteries but can come at a lower cost. GM also hopes to cut costs by reducing the complexity of its battery packs.

In heavy duty vehicle news, the NHL’s Minnesota Wild recently rolled out a new electric Zamboni, which the club hopes will reduce its environmental footprint along with its overall energy consumption.
