Good morning, and welcome to the latest Resources Intelligence Report.

Big Tech made big news this past week with its further embrace of nuclear power. The news itself probably was not a big surprise to anyone who has been following the rapid growth of data centers, but the details are interesting.

First, Google announced a 500 MW power purchase agreement with Kairos Power involving the molten salt small modular reactor (SMR) that Kairos is developing.

Two days later, Amazon announced agreements with X-energy and Energy Northwest involving the gas-cooled SMR that X-energy is developing, and a memorandum of understanding with Dominion Energy Virginia to explore commercial and financing structures for SMR development in Virginia.

John Cropley has both of these stories and writes that the deals will help Kairos and X-Energy continue their progress along the long and expensive road to regulatory approval and commercial availability of their designs.

Moving on to offshore wind:

  • Hugh Morley updates us from a conference in New Jersey, at which speakers said states can reap long-term savings by upgrading their grids and coordinating transmission development to handle multiple offshore wind projects.

  • From the same conference, Morley has an upbeat assessment of New Jersey’s profile in the offshore wind industry. Speakers said the state has rebounded from project cancellations and adapted to changing circumstances.

  • Ayla Burnett has a story on offshore wind infrastructure, this time on the West Coast: The California Energy Commission is offering $43 million in grants for waterfront development to support the industry state leaders hope will take root there.

  • James Downing looks at Dominion Energy’s 2024 Integrated Resource Plan, which lays out multiple scenarios to meet rising power demand within its territory. About 80% of the new generation it is proposing would be carbon-free, including 3,400 MW of new offshore wind capacity.

That’s all for offshore wind. Normally, NetZero Insider can count on Cropley for our maritime coverage, but this past week he had other fish to fry. Along with the two pieces on nuclear energy, he has two solar energy stories:

  • New York, which has been struggling to meet its 2030 renewable energy goals, blew past a 2025 target with more than a year to spare: Over 6 GW of distributed solar is operational across the state.

From our curated roundup of reporting by other media outlets, we offer a few themed reading suggestions:

Offshore, The New Bedford Light and Nantucket Current have updates on the blade failure at Vineyard Wind, while CNBC takes a look at a wind farm that went according to plan — the pioneering South Fork Wind, which went into operation earlier this year (near Vineyard Wind) and is held up as a contrast to the problems other U.S. offshore wind projects are experiencing.

Here is a cluster of stories about efforts to expand the green hydrogen sector:

  • Heatmap reports on Plug Power’s apparent halt of work on what was supposed to be the largest hydrogen plant in the Northeast.

And nuclear power remains a frequent headline topic:

All this and much more is gathered in this week’s Intelligence Report. Thanks for reading!
