NetZero Insider’s decarbonized transportation coverage for this week was led by Hugh Morley’s article on $250 million in federal funding allocated to the development of 167 medium- and heavy-duty truck charging ports on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Government officials expressed hope that the charging stations will help alleviate concerns about vehicle range, and eventually help cut heavy-duty vehicle pollution in environmental justice communities. While trucks and busses account for roughly 10% of the state’s carbon emissions, the rollout of electric vehicles in this sector has been sluggish.

In news from other sources, Massachusetts announced it is delaying its compliance with California’s emissions rules for heavy-duty trucks. The state said there are not enough options that meet the emissions requirements.

On the light-duty vehicle side, Americans bought a record number of EVs in the third quarter of this year, up by 11%. This brings EVs up to about 9% of all cars sold, although year-over-year growth has slowed.

Meanwhile, a new report from J.D. Power looks at why customers are often unsatisfied with plug-in hybrids, which are frequently touted as a bridge to EVs. Plug-in hybrids are costly to purchase and maintain, in part because of their need for two separate powertrains. The research firm said better customer education is needed.

In aviation decarbonization news, the U.S. Department of Energy announced a nearly $3 billion effort intended to significantly boost the U.S.’ output of sustainable aviation fuel. The department has conditionally committed to loaning more than $1.4 billion to two U.S.-based renewable fuel producers.
