Artificial intelligences are becoming more human every day, as one seems to have finally developed one of the most basic human traits: the ability to get bored on the job.

The team responsible for Claude 3.5 Sonnet — a program Anthropic built to process large information, brainstorm ideas, and generate text and code — was giving an demonstration on its ability to write code when the AI stopped what it was doing, opened Google and started perusing pictures of Yellowstone National Park. Of all the examples I have used over the years to link AI to the doom of our race, this one almost warms my heart. Maybe AI really can be like us. I mean, I’ve checked my fantasy football rosters like three times just while writing this email.

The real revelation will come the day the AI just starts itself up on a Sunday night, turns on Sunday Night Football and disregards all commands until the game is over. Then I might actually be proud.
