Salute to Captain Alvarez. | Ken-Yon Hardy/Stars and Stripes

October 29, 2024
Civilians can never really thank those who fight and protect our country enough. Their sacrifice simply cannot be quantified. The best we can do is recognize them as much as we can.
Congress is in the process of doing that for Navy Captain Everett Alvarez, Jr., who was the first aviator shot down in the Vietnam War and the second-longest held prisoner of war in U.S. history. Alvarez, who is now 86, was captured Aug. 5, 1964, while on a bombing mission near the North Vietnam-China border and went on to spend 3,113 days (8.5 years) in captivity at two prison camps. The “Everett Alvarez Jr. Gold Medal Act of 2023,” which aims to award Alvarez with the Congressional Gold Medal, passed the House unanimously in May and is expected to be taken up (and passed) by the Senate this November.
The medal may not make up for all the time Alvarez lost and the pain he endured, but it’s the best “thank you” our country can offer. And I would say he has more than earned it.
