I’d say thanks for the memories, NEOWISE, but I guess I should say thanks for the information.
NEOWISE, a NASA telescope that was initially used to study galaxies and later tasked with spotting near-Earth objects, burned up on re-entry on Nov. 1, putting an end to the instrument’s 15 years of use. From 2009 to 2011, the telescope scanned and documented the sky in infrared. After running out of the coolant that protected its infrared instruments, the telescope was pulled out of hibernation in 2013 to survey asteroids, comets and other potential threats. However, the sun’s increased activity decayed NEOWISE’s orbit to the point that it finally burned up in our atmosphere.
On the bright side, that’s one less piece of space junk floating around.
