Your weekly intelligence on EVs and Transportation Decarbonization
 ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

This week’s decarbonized transportation news was dominated by speculation about what a second Trump administration — coupled with Republican control of the Senate and likely the House, as of the writing of this newsletter — will mean for the electric vehicle industry.

In the immediate aftermath of the election, automotive forecaster GlobalData reduced its projection for the 2030 EV market share from 33% to 28%.

The incoming administration will likely target a wide range of federal policies driving the transition to EVs. New federal efficiency requirements will likely be rescinded, along with federal EV tax credits and other industry incentives included in the Inflation Reduction Act.

President-elect Donald Trump has also argued that EPA should end its waivers allowing the California Air Resource Board (CARB) to set stricter emissions and pollution standards than federal requirements. Repealing this authority likely would be a major blow to state clean energy goals; 16 other states and D.C. follow CARB’s emission rules.

Trump’s victory has already given a big boost to Tesla: The company’s stock price has risen by about 28% in the wake of the election. Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s $130 million bet on Trump and the Republican Party appears to have paid off, with the billionaire poised for a major role in the administration.

On the day after the election, Toyota executive David Christ told an Automotive Press Association event that the trend toward electric and hybrid vehicles will continue regardless of the administration, and that “it’s really important to recognize investments can’t be undone in four years.”

But two days later, Toyota Motor North American COO Jack Hollis took a slightly different tone, criticizing vehicle emissions rules from EPA and CARB. Hollis declined to say whether the company would back a Trump administration effort to undermine CARB’s rules. But he also noted that the company is considering adjusting the ratio of fully electric to hybrid-electric vehicles it will produce at a new production plant in North Carolina.

Beyond the turbulent U.S. EV industry, Daimler Truck won an approximately $250 million grant from the German government to test 100 Mercedes GenH2 hydrogen trucks. The testing is intended to improve production strategies for the trucks, along with the vehicles’ performance and reliability.

And in aviation news, a Vermont-based startup announced that it has reached more than $1 billion in equity capital, which it says will enable it to commercialize its all-electric aircraft and charging systems. But the week brought far worse news for German electric air-taxi startup Lilium, which is planning to file for insolvency after failing to secure new funding.

All that and more in this week’s Intelligence Report:
