The longer I have been a part of the social media generation, the more I’ve come to think it is more bad than good. I’ve said Twitter/X is both the greatest and worst thing ever created. It is great for instant news (especially in sports), but at the same, it allows anyone to say anything they want to anyone else without the fear of any repercussions.
Australia seems to be thinking the same way — at least when it comes to their youth — as the nation is planning to ban Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X from anyone under 16 years old. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the legislation will be introduced this year and would hold social media platforms responsible for preventing access to children. However, as an avid gamer, this might be where I draw the line.
I find myself caught in the middle of this one. When I was younger, my parents didn’t censor the books I read, the games I played or the music I listened to, and I’d say I turned out just fine. At the same time, I didn’t have instant access to the entire world (especially with dialup internet) — and the entire world didn’t have access to me. I guess this is where “good parenting” comes in, but it also wouldn’t hurt to not have those things join the fight against you.
