“Only you (and deforestation) can prevent forest fires.” | Midjourney

Wildfires have caused a lot of destruction in the West and Northwest over the last few years. In fact, from January to July of this year, 28,000 wildfires burned more than 4.5 million acres in the U.S. and have cost states like California and Washington millions of dollars. And while utilities and states have come up with wildfire mitigation plans, the U.S. Forest Service proposed a much simpler idea: cut down more trees.
The Forest Service released a proposal last week that would allow increased logging on federal lands across the Pacific Northwest and overhaul the Northwest Forest Plan that governs roughly 38,000 square miles in Oregon, Washington and California. A 120-day comment period is now open, with a decision date set for early 2026.
I get the idea, but are we going to close convenience stores because people rob them? Or limit the number of cars on a highway because there are too many accidents? Just removing the item that suffers the effect doesn’t necessarily solve the problem. What do you think?
