No matter how much us people of the continental United States like to complain about how early it gets dark in the winter, just remember — there is always someone who has it worse than you.
That someone is the Alaskan town of Utqiagvik (formerly known as Barrow). When the sun set at 1:27 p.m. local time on Monday, it was the last time the town of 5,000 will see it again until Jan. 22 — making for 64 days of night. On top of that, the darkness feeds into what is called a “stratospheric polar vortex,” which is a whirlpool of cold, sinking air that influences the weather and will keep the area below zero degrees for the duration. I’d say that doesn’t really sound like a great winter vacation spot.
Let’s just hope this prolonged night goes better than it did in 2007…
