Welcome to the latest NetZero Insider Resources Intelligence Report.

We start off in the Gulf of Mexico, where the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has received enough expression of interest in offshore wind development that it will start planning a 2026 wind lease auction. But our John Cropley notes that some impending leadership changes could trump those plans.

Our staff were diverted to other net-zero news last week, so it was a rare stretch of light coverage of news about resources. But from our curated roundup of other media outlets’ work, we can recommend a few interesting and impactful stories:

  • The Associated Press ran a feet-on-the-ground investigation into the grim realities of lithium mining in Nigeria — often by children, many of them working long hours in unsafe conditions. The full story and a shorter takeaway piece are linked here.

  • POWER Magazine reports that a recently retired facility that had been the largest coal-fired plant in Pennsylvania will be converted to burn natural gas. And Wyoming Public Media reports coal-to-natural gas conversions continue in the nation’s leading coal-producing state

  • BNN Bloomberg talks to a white-hat hacker who was able to position himself to cripple the European grid via faulty rooftop solar panels — working from home with a laptop and a smartphone.

Remember the hydrogen hubs announced with fanfare by the Biden administration 14 months ago? They have proved to not be universally popular, and progress on them has been mixed:

  • Inside Climate News reports the impending second term of President Trump and strong economic headwinds cloud the prospects for the Philadelphia-area hub.

  • Energy News Network has a story on community advocates being unhappy with the closed process and limited public engagement in planning the $7 billion hub initiative.

Care for an update on the struggles of the offshore wind sector? You have several choices. Among them:

  • The New Bedford Light has a deep dive on the wind turbine blade failure that dealt a serious setback earlier this year to GE Vernova and to the Vineyard Wind project off the Massachusetts coast.

  • Reuters looks at how the latest offshore wind tender by Denmark — a nerve center of the western offshore wind industry — could fail so completely, with not even a single bid submitted.

  • And the Denmark edition of The Local picks up an AFP report on how the leading offshore wind developer, Ørsted, grew so successful and fell so far off course in such a relatively short period of time.

Finally, critical minerals are at the heart of much of the technology advancing net-zero initiatives. And some of the best supply lines for these minerals start in China, which is trying to use that as leverage against the U.S.:

  • And POLITICO Greenwire reports that the Biden administration has rejected price support to counter China’s mineral dominance but will provide $17 million to support research into these critical materials and alternatives.

All this and much more is gathered in this week’s Intelligence Report:
