Welcome to the latest NetZero Insider Resources Intelligence Report. We start with a global update: In its annual report on the clean energy transition, BloombergNEF calculates that worldwide investments reached $2.1 trillion in 2024, which was the most ever and was the first time the total surpassed $2 trillion in a single year. John Cropley has the details.

Our New England reporter, Jon Lamson, has two updates on power in that region:

  • The Massachusetts DPU approved a significant cost increase for the New England Clean Energy Connect resulting from the two-year pause in construction of the transmission line during court battles by opponents.

  • ISO-NE reported that New England in 2024 saw its highest-ever percentage of natural gas-fired electrical generation. The 59,883 GWh translated to 55% of all generation and 51% of net energy for load.

Also on the subject of natural gas generation, Cropley has stories on two separate agreements to pursue development of gas turbines co-located with data centers or other large loads:

  • NextEra Energy and GE Vernova plan to build and co-own gas turbines, renewables and storage to serve these customers.

  • Chevron and Engine No. 1 said they plan to build a multi-gigawatt gas-fired power plant co-located with a data center and have secured manufacturing slots for seven of GE Vernova’s 7HA turbines.

Cropley brings us up to speed as well on a step forward for renewables in New York and a step back in New Jersey:

  • The New York Power Authority has finalized its strategic plan for how to fulfill its new mandate to develop renewables. The plan lists 37 potential projects totaling 3 GW, which critics say is too little but which NYPA emphasizes is just the first tranche.

  • Shell backed out of its partnership with EDF-RE Offshore Development on the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind project in New Jersey, taking a $1 billion impairment in the process. Atlantic Shores says it will continue development after Shell’s departure.

As always, our fellow journalists at other news outlets were busy covering other developments this past week, and as always, we have gathered links to some of their work.

In nuclear news:

  • POWER Magazine reports that TerraPower has a deal with Saber Data Centers to power its operations with future nuclear generation.

  • The Energy Information Administration reports that the U.S. nuclear industry imported more than 99% of the uranium concentrate that it used to make fuel in 2023.

In offshore wind news:

  • The Clean Air Task Force offers a retrospective analysis of the delays and other setbacks the U.S. offshore wind sector suffered before President Trump returned to the White House.

In energy storage news:

  • Canary Media argues that the Moss Landing battery plant was an older facility built with safety standards and practices considerably less stringent than those used today, so the high-profile fire there should not tarnish the image of the storage industry.

All this and much more is gathered in this week’s Intelligence Report:
