When it comes to driving, there are two things that can “drive” anyone crazy: traffic and potholes. One takes a toll on your mental health, while the other will shake your car’s frame to the core.
While traffic is something that may only get worse with time because of the ever growing population of the world, the pothole problem may become less of an issue thanks to … recycled cooking oil? Recent research has shown that the oil can prevent oxidation that would otherwise cause the bitumen (the substance that binds asphalt) to become brittle and allow cracks — and eventually potholes — to form. Laboratory experiments have suggested the method could prolong the lifespan of roads by 30%.
This seems like a great idea to me, or at least one we should explore the viability of. Lord knows this country has more than enough cooking oil to spare.
