More than 5,000 years ago, the Indus Valley Civilization — the earliest known urban culture of the Indian subcontinent — thrived along the Arabian Sea and the Indus River. Some 100 years after its discovery, people are still trying to figure out what the heck they were saying.
M.K. Stalin, chief minister of the Indian state Tamil Nadu, last week began offering $1 million to anyone who can decipher the civilization’s uncovered seals. The script is hard to decrypt because it tends to occur in short inscriptions, usually around five symbols long, and lacks a bilingual artifact that could offer further clues. The only thing we seem to know is 67 signs account for about 80% of the script and its mostly found on objects of commerce. Are they all just a bunch of “for sale” signs? My guess is as good as theirs.
My thing is: How are they going to know when someone is right? If no one has a clue what it says now, who is going to confirm its meaning? Oh well. Not for me to decide.
