A looming fight between the Trump Administration, California and other states that follow its stronger rules for air emissions from cars could determine the future of electric vehicles, Semafor said in a story. On the way out, the Biden Administration approved the state’s plan to require all new vehicles sold there are electric by 2035, but the Trump Administration is considering revoking it.

The market leader in EVs in California is losing market share as the number of Tesla cars registered fell 11.6% last year, The Hill reported. Tesla CEO Elon Musk supported President Trump’s campaign and that did not help sales in the very blue state. Still, the firm’s products made up 52.5% of California’s market.

While California saw 22% of overall car sales go to electric vehicles in 2024, the number in oil-rich Norway for January blows it out of the water at 96%, according to CBS News. The Scandinavian country also has a target of 100% EV sales, and it is well ahead of the European average of just 13.6% for 2024.

Forbes has a story on a report from the International Council on Clean Transportation that found EV adoption could lead to global oil demand peaking in 2025 at 9 gigatons then falling to 7.1 gigatons by 2050, which is 25 years earlier than the group’s previous forecast. Declining transportation emission cuts in China, the European Union and the U.S. would offset growth in other markets in the projections.

Heatmap looked into the impacts of President Trump’s for-now-suspended 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and found they would hurt internal combustion cars more than EVs. Electric vehicles have fewer parts than traditional models — several hundred to a few thousand for EVs compared to 20,000 to 30,000 for internal combustion vehicles. With the supply chain crossing national borders, the inputs to internal combustion would be hit with more frequent tariffs, raising their prices more than EVs’ price.
