Happy Friday from ERO Insider, your source for the latest from the world of electric reliability! After the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday here in the U.S., it was another eventful week for our hardworking correspondents. Let’s dive right in and have a look at their work!
FERC’s commissioners had a slate of NERC-sponsored reliability standards to review at their monthly open meeting this week. Join Holden Mann inside for a look at the new standards and what they mean for grid operators’ approach to inverter-based resources and extreme weather. (See FERC Approves IBR, Extreme Weather Reliability Standards.)
A new study from the Energy Innovation Policy and Technology think tank says new thinking is needed about what a reliable power system looks like. K Kaufmann brings you a deep dive into the report and an interview with one of its co-authors. (See Energy Innovation: US Needs New Approach to Grid Reliability.)
Electric utilities had to come to grips with some major supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the lessons are still being absorbed years later. Industry leaders opened up about the challenges during a panel at NERC’s Board of Trustees and Member Representatives Committee meetings last week. (See Utilities Say Procurement Challenges Growing Since Pandemic.)
That’s it for this week, but we’ll be bringing you more news from the ERO Enterprise and beyond all next week, and we’ll have another weekly email on Friday. Stay safe and warm, and enjoy your week!
