Today we provide a lesson in holding your horses.
“Jack the Ripper” was a serial killer who murdered at least five women in London in 1888, and one enthusiast claims he has finally identified the assailant.
Forensic scientist and Ripper researcher Russell Edwards said DNA matches found on a piece of cloth that was believed to belong to Catherine Eddowes, Jack’s fourth victim, also showed a 100% match for Polish barber Aaron Kosminski. The 23-year-old Polish immigrant was a suspect at the time, but a lack of evidence kept him free.
But, just to be clear: While this is a very fascinating possibility, Edwards has been claiming he’s had DNA “evidence” for over a decade. It’s a little unclear as to why this “story” is making the news cycle again, but we felt it would be worth clarifying in case you happen to see the Ripper’s identity has finally been solved — because it hasn’t. For details about the Kosminski theory, see this comprehensive summary.
