NetZero Insider’s EVs & Transportation news was led by a story from K Kaufmann on Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s rescission of a Biden-era memorandum outlining priorities for allocating federal highway funding. The memo included considerations of climate vulnerability, environmental impacts, compatibility with emerging technologies and community engagement. Duffy called the memo an act of federal overreach creating “meritless and costly burdens related to greenhouse gas emissions and equity initiatives.”

Despite the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back EV incentives, state-level policy efforts continue. Hugh Morley reported that New Jersey is pushing ahead with new electric vehicle incentives, announcing about $185 million in new incentives so far this year. EV growth in the state slowed in 2024, and some experts have expressed concern that the funding announced by the state can only go so far to counteract the Trump administration’s efforts to undercut the EV industry.

In news from other sources, backlash against Tesla has mounted because of the right-wing politics and increasingly polarizing brand of CEO Elon Musk. In Germany, new Tesla registrations declined by 76% after Musk backed a far-right political party, despite industry-wide EV registrations in the country growing by 31%.

EV buyers in the U.S. tend to lean liberal, which makes Musk’s prominent role in the Trump administration a significant challenge for Tesla. Polling indicates that the percentage of new vehicle buyers strongly considering buying a Tesla declined from 22% in 2022 to under 8% in 2024, when the company posted its first year-over-year sales decline in its history.

The company is also struggling in China, its most important market outside the U.S. Shipments were about 50% lower in February compared to February 2023. EV sales by Chinese automaker BYD have grown rapidly over the past year, as the company offers significantly cheaper EVs than Tesla.

However, the company may benefit from tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Mexico, Canada and China. The company’s supply chain in the U.S. is largely self-sufficient, while major automakers are more reliant on international supply chains for manufacturing.
