This week’s transportation decarbonization news was headlined by the Trump administration’s new 25% tariff on imported cars, light trucks and auto parts. Industry experts estimate the duties could raise new vehicle prices by up to $5,000, a cost which could rise even higher depending on how the tariffs are applied to imports from Mexico and Canada.

Japanese automakers — including Toyota, Honda, and Nissan — may be particularly vulnerable to the tariffs, as they rely heavily on imports into the US.

Meanwhile, United Auto Workers union applauded the tariffs, calling them “a major step in the right direction for autoworkers and blue-collar communities across the country,” and urging automakers to “bring back good union jobs to the U.S.”

What the tariffs mean for the electric vehicle industry remains to be seen, though Hyundai Motor Co. recently announced a $21 billion investment in facilities in the U.S. The company has leaned heavily into electrification and aims to sell $2 million EVs per year by 2030.

Tesla appears less vulnerable to the tariffs relative to other major EV makers, but CEO Elon Musk said the tariffs “will affect the price of parts in Tesla cars that come from other countries,” adding that he anticipates a “not trivial” impact on prices.

The company continues to face backlash for Musk’s ties to the Trump administration, with new Tesla registrations in Europe declining by 47% in February. In Washington state, Tesla registrations were down 28% compared to February 2024.

Meanwhile, Canada froze EV rebates for Tesla vehicles in response to the new U.S. tariffs and banned the company from participating in future rebate programs.

Globally, Chinese automaker BYD surpassed Tesla in total revenue in 2024, in part driven by a 40% increase in EV and hybrid sales. Tesla still sold slightly more battery EVs in 2024 — 1.79 million — while BYD sold 1.76 million BEVs.

Lastly, California now has significantly more public and shared private EV charging ports than gas pumps due to the rapid growth in the number of chargers available in the state since 2022. The vast majority of these ports are Level 2 chargers; about 17,000 of the 178,500 EV ports are fast chargers.
