Welcome to NetZero Insider’s latest Resources Intelligence Report.

We lead off with an update on the floating offshore wind research array planned by the state of Maine. The concept has faced a number of challenges, not least of which has been recent federal policy shifts. The prospective developer has broken off negotiations, citing recent changes in the energy industry landscape. John Cropley has the story.

New York has released the first iteration of its Grid of the Future Plan, an effort to move the state toward greater use of flexible resources to meet future power needs in an affordable, reliable manner. That is not a simple goal, and the report suggests several potential improvements to the process of pursuing it. Cropley reports that the second iteration is due by the end of this year.

The New York Power Authority is spending $206 million to buy a parcel of land in New York City that has had a convoluted recent history. An aging gas-fired power plant was torn down when plans for a new gas plant were rejected, then the site was sold to an offshore wind developer that subsequently withdrew its proposal for the site and is now selling to NYPA, which has not specified an exact use but expects it to be clean energy-related. Cropley has the details.

We have gathered dozens of stories from other media outlets on net-zero resources. Here are a few thematically linked selections:

  • The National Interest and The Associated Press have stories on states rushing to be part of the possible wave of small modular reactor development; E&E News reminds us that next-generation nuclear technology has a long way to go before it can even start to meet the expectations held out for it.

  • Solar Builder and E&E News offer their own takes on the blueprint for battery storage facility safety that the American Clean Power Association drew up in the wake of the high-profile Moss Island fire; Energy Storage News looks at the large-scale energy storage implementation plan recently approved by New York state; and a piece in POWER Magazine argues that second-life EV batteries are the future of grid-scale energy storage systems.

All this and much more is gathered in this week’s Intelligence Report:
