This week’s transportation decarbonization news was led by an announcement by CATL, the world’s largest electric vehicle battery supplier, of technological advances offering the potential for cheaper, lighter, faster-charging and longer-range batteries.

The company announced progress toward the development of auxiliary batteries that would not require graphite, allowing for cheaper production and greater energy density. Auxiliary batteries would provide EVs with a source of backup power, which will be important for self-driving EVs that need uninterrupted electricity. CATL said it expects the auxiliary batteries to become available in the next two to three years.

Company officials also announced advances in charging speed for its main batteries, along with plans to begin selling sodium ion batteries, which offer the potential of improved performance in cold weather.

In heavy-duty news, the trucking industry is pressuring states to delay enforcement of California’s Advanced Clean Truck Rule, which would require steep reductions in gas truck sales by the by the mid-2030s. Politico reports that a half-dozen states are considering delaying enforcement of the rule. Maryland and Massachusetts have already acquiesced to the pressure.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court signaled that it would revive a lawsuit by fuel producers against California’s vehicle emissions standards, and President Donald Trump has directed the EPA to review California’s waiver, which it likely will move to repeal.

Amid the policy turmoil, Vermont reported that the total number of EVs in the state grew by more than 40% in the past year. The Natural Resources Defense Council has ranked the state first in the country in transportation decarbonization, with plug-in vehicles accounting for more than 12% of vehicles sold in the state in 2024. Officials attributed the state’s progress to increased public charging availability and the growing number of EV options for consumers.

In industry news, Tesla has delayed U.S. production of a cheaper version of its Model Y SUV by a few months, according to Reuters, which did not indicate the reason for the delay. During the company’s earnings call on Tuesday, the company said it is on track to launch affordable models in the first half of this year but acknowledged that “the ramp might be slower than we had hoped initially.”

Declining sales in the first quarter caused the company to report its lowest automotive profitability on record.
